Throat & Voice Care in Dhaka

A sore throat that keeps returning can disrupt meals, sleep and work. A voice that sounds different—or tires halfway through a conversation—can be just as frustrating.

Consult Dr. Md. Abdullah Al Mamun in Dhaka for an assessment of throat infections, tonsil problems and voice changes, with treatment guided by the cause.

Throat Infections

Painful swallowing, fever and swollen tonsils can make even a simple meal uncomfortable. Many throat infections are caused by viruses and improve with supportive care. Antibiotics may be appropriate for certain bacterial infections, but they are not needed for every sore throat.

If infections keep returning or symptoms are not settling, an examination can help identify the problem and guide treatment. Difficulty breathing, inability to swallow or rapidly worsening throat swelling needs urgent medical attention.

Voice Disorders

Your voice may sound rough, weak or breathy. Perhaps speaking takes more effort than usual, especially after teaching, singing or long conversations.

Voice changes can follow an infection, repeated strain or a problem with how the vocal cords move. A small camera examination of the voice box helps identify the cause. Treatment may include changes in voice habits, voice therapy or a procedure when needed.

Tonsillectomy

When repeated tonsillitis means missed school, time off work and frequent painful swallowing, removing the tonsils may be worth discussing. Tonsillectomy may also help when enlarged tonsils obstruct breathing during sleep.

The decision considers how often episodes happen, how severe they are and their effect on daily life. Removing the tonsils can address recurrent tonsillitis, but it will not prevent every future sore throat.

Recovery involves throat pain and careful attention to fluids, food and prescribed pain relief. Bleeding is an important risk to discuss before surgery.

Microlaryngeal Surgery

Some vocal cord problems need a closer examination or treatment under general anaesthesia.

Microlaryngeal surgery uses a microscope and fine instruments passed through the mouth to examine and treat the voice box. It can be used to remove selected growths or take a tissue sample for diagnosis, usually without an external incision.

The aim depends on the condition. Possible risks include dental injury and temporary or lasting voice changes, so the expected benefit and recovery plan should be clear beforehand.

Vocal Cord Diseases

Vocal cord nodules, polyps and cysts can interfere with the vibrations that produce your voice. Weakness or paralysis of a vocal cord can also affect speaking and, sometimes, swallowing.

Not every vocal cord problem needs surgery. Some respond to voice therapy and changes in how the voice is used; others need a procedure or further investigation. Persistent hoarseness deserves an examination rather than repeated treatment without a diagnosis.

Questions You May Have

How long should I wait before checking a hoarse voice?

If your voice has not improved within three to four weeks, arrange an ENT assessment. Seek advice sooner if you have a neck lump, difficulty swallowing, coughing up blood or a history of smoking. Breathing difficulty needs urgent attention.

Will I need complete voice rest after surgery?

You may need a short period of complete voice rest, followed by a gradual return to speaking. The instructions depend on the procedure. Whispering also uses your vocal cords, so it should be avoided when complete voice rest is prescribed. Voice therapy may support your recovery.

Does a vocal cord growth mean cancer?

No. Nodules, polyps and cysts are non-cancerous. However, an unusual or suspicious area may need a biopsy to establish exactly what it is.

Talk About What Has Changed

Tell the doctor when your symptoms started, how often they return and whether your work depends on your voice. Bring previous prescriptions or reports so the discussion can build on what has already been tried.
